Honey/Hair
Honey/Hair is a piece performed in May of 2022 as a part of an exhibition Cradle to Grave curated by Dante Cokinos. This work explores Jordan’s 16 year old self in relation to sexuality and a forced coming of age. It has been a common story for many young queer to have an abrupt growth when first discovering themselves. This work confronts the damage this has caused to Jordan when navigating his relationships. There is a stickiness that he feel surrounds himself when looking back at memories of being 16 and not knowing any better. How does a community who has been repressed deal with a late understanding of themselves? What is the impact of this on a new generation of queer people?

In the middle of the gallery a white sheet with two pillows. A wine glass, spoon, mirror, 2 quarts of honey, a lemon, a razor and a large jar sit on top of the sheet.
The work starts with the shaving of Jordan’s beard in a small mirror, in the background a lesson on the growing bodies of teenagers plays through a speaker. When finished the beard hairs were placed into a large jar, on top of that the 1 quart of honey. Jordan then mixed the honey and hair together and poured it onto himself. He walked around the sheet stopping and scooping up the mixture onto a spoon and feeding it to himself. Throughout this gesture he would take bites out of an unpeeled lemon. The performance ended with Jordan taking off his honey soaked underwear and dumping it into the jar along with the other quarter of honey, the leftover bits of the lemon, and whatever hair could still be scooped off the body. He then drank directly from the jar attempting to drink what he could. The performance time lasted 20 minutes.
